Tip # 1 – Do Not Use More Than 30 Hashtags

Do not use more than 30 hashtags per post. After 30 hashtags, the hashtags stop working on that post.

Tip # 2 – Use Popular Hashtags

Next to each hashtag I’ve listed is a number. The higher the number, the more the hashtag is used, thus the more popular the hashtag. The more popular a hashtag is, the more your post is seen. This comes with it’s pros and cons. Really popular hashtags sometimes have a lot of spammy posts and bots that peruse the hashtag. While you want visibility, you want to attract the right audience. For example, the hashtag #book has over 16,492,615 posts under that tag. It’s a very popular tag among the writing / reading community. Nudity often gets posted under this tag by horrible people that want to take advantage of how popular it is. The more spammy a tag is, the more likely your account will attract bot followers, likes, or people that just stumbled upon your content by accident that may not have any interest in your post. This leads to useless, ghost followers and low engagement. #Book is not as bad as the hashtag #love (988,997,691 posts), but it can get spammy.

Tip # 3 – Leave hashtags out of your caption, and comment instead!

Avoid putting hashtags in your photo caption, and post hashtags in the comment section. First, you will want to keep your Instagram caption as clean as possible. Not only does this make it more legible, but more shareable. Second, Instagram is now discouraging long wordy captions by hiding portions of your caption once it reaches a certain length in a “read more” like fashion. To avoid both of these, use short, punchy captions. There are more advanced ways to use hashtags in your captions while remaining aesthetically pleasing, but as a rule of thumb its best to leave it in the comment section.
